Artist Statement

We live in a world of visual pollution. There is a Zen maxim, “When you pick up one piece of dust the entire world comes with it.” My method of painting is to examine the complexity of our modern visual environment such as; realism verses abstraction verses nonrepresentational design.  My challenge as an artist is to test the modernist paradigm of value relativism and the  viewer’s perception of the culture and world influenced by the desires of the individual over the welfare of the whole. Television and film entertainment, Internet streaming, magazines, the history of visual art, and daily life activity are all considered.
In a world where reality and fiction have become interchangeable, I use the harmony of opposition, Order and Chaos, to describe the modern paradigm. Why?
Because it isn’t always easy to determine which is order and which is chaos, which is truth or lies, good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or wrong.
